Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost — What Regular Maintenance Really Looks Like
Elite Motorworks · Gloucestershire

This Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost came to us for its first-ever wet belt replacement. The owner hadn't left it until the last moment — they'd booked it in before the manufacturer's recommended interval was reached, aware it was getting close and not wanting to take any chances. That decision made all the difference, and what we found when we opened the engine up was a great example of what consistent, correct routine maintenance can do.
What Is a Wet Belt?
The Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost uses what's known as a "wet belt" system — the timing belt runs inside the engine immersed in oil, rather than being exposed to air like a traditional belt. It's a compact, clever design, but it makes the choice of oil critical. The wrong specification or degraded oil accelerates belt wear significantly and can lead to premature failure with devastating consequences for the engine.
What the Belt Told Us
When we removed the belt, we were pleased with what we found. Despite its age, it was fully intact — no lost or loose teeth, no visible deterioration of the belt material. This is a direct result of the owner keeping on top of their oil changes using the correct specification fluid. It's a tangible, visible example of why servicing with the right oil matters, and why cutting corners on maintenance can cost you an engine.
Getting it done before the interval was reached meant the belt came out in the best possible condition — and that's exactly how it should be. Waiting until the last mile of a recommended interval, or beyond it, is a gamble. This owner didn't gamble, and the engine reflected that. The belt came out, and everything in that system came out with it.
The Work Carried Out
With the engine open, we carried out a thorough, complete replacement — not just a belt swap:
Genuine Ford Timing Belt & Oil Pump Belt — Replaced
We used genuine Ford components throughout — no pattern parts. The timing belt and oil pump belt were both replaced to manufacturer specification.
Oil Strainer & Turbo Feed Oil Gauze — Thoroughly Cleaned
The oil strainer and turbo feed oil gauze were removed and thoroughly cleaned. These are easily overlooked but critically important — a restricted gauze can starve the turbocharger of oil, leading to premature bearing wear or turbo failure.
Engine & Sump — Cleaned
With the sump off, we took the opportunity to clean the engine and sump properly — removing any accumulated residue before fresh oil went back in.
Water Pump Assembly — Replaced
The water pump assembly was replaced as part of the job. With everything already stripped down, it makes no sense to leave an aged water pump in place and risk having to go back in to replace it later.
Oil, Oil Filter, Sump Plug & Coolant — All Renewed
Fresh oil of the correct specification, a new oil filter, a new sump plug, and a full coolant change completed the service. There's no point doing this job and putting old fluids back in.
Testing & Road Test
This entire job was carried out at the client's home — a good example of what our mobile service is genuinely capable of. Before the car moved, we carried out a thorough check for leaks across every system we'd touched — oil, coolant, and the wet belt circuit. Only once we were satisfied that everything was sealed and the engine was running correctly did we take it out. We then completed an extended road test to confirm the repair under real driving conditions, checking temperatures, oil pressure, and engine behaviour throughout.
The car left in excellent mechanical health — and with a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty covering all the parts and labour we'd supplied.
The Takeaway
This job is a great reminder that doing the basics right — using the correct oil, servicing on time — genuinely makes a difference you can see. It also shows what a proper wet belt replacement looks like when it's done thoroughly. If your EcoBoost is approaching its belt interval, don't delay. And when you book it, make sure whoever does it is replacing the full assembly — not just the belt.
