Pre-purchase inspection on a 2006 Bentley Continental GTC - Elite Motorworks Gloucestershire

A customer contacted us about a 2006 Bentley Continental GTC they were seriously considering buying. The price looked attractive — but with a car like this, attractive prices deserve careful scrutiny. What we found during the inspection was a stark reminder of why these checks matter.

Why a Pre-Purchase Inspection Matters on a Car Like This

The Continental GTC is a beautiful machine — a 6.0-litre W12, all-wheel drive, a powered convertible roof, and the kind of interior that makes an impression the moment you sit in it. But that complexity cuts both ways. When things go wrong on a Bentley, they go wrong expensively. Parts are often dealer-only. Labour rates are high. And a car that looks immaculate on the surface can be quietly accumulating a bill that dwarfs its purchase price.

This is precisely the scenario our inspection uncovered.

What We Found

The car presented well cosmetically — clean bodywork, tidy interior at a glance. But once we got into the detail, the picture changed considerably. Here's what the inspection flagged:

Convertible Roof Not Functioning

The roof would not operate correctly — traced to a suspected switch fault. On the Continental GTC, the roof mechanism is complex and the control switches are not off-the-shelf items. Replacement switches are available through Bentley only, at significant cost.

Left-Hand Turbo Oil Drain — Heavy Corrosion

The oil drain on the left-hand turbocharger was heavily corroded. Replacement of this component would in all likelihood require engine removal on this platform — a labour-intensive job carrying a substantial cost that needs to be factored into any purchase decision.

Interior Switches Deteriorated — Bentley-Only Parts

Several interior switches had deteriorated noticeably. These are not generic components — they are sourced exclusively through Bentley, and priced accordingly.

Flat Main Battery — Emergency Access Required

The main battery had gone flat, requiring emergency access to the vehicle before the inspection could even begin. The battery itself required replacement on the day.

Brake Calipers — Heavy Corrosion

All brake calipers were heavily corroded. This isn't just a cosmetic concern — on a vehicle in this condition, a routine brake fluid change would carry a real risk of bleed nipples either snapping or weeping, potentially turning a maintenance job into a caliper replacement job.

Service Documentation for a Different Vehicle

The service history in the car did not correspond to the vehicle — the documentation was for a different car entirely. Beyond the stamps in the book, there was no way to independently verify what service items had been completed, what was overdue, or when key maintenance had last been carried out. On a W12 with this many service-sensitive components, that ambiguity carries real financial risk.

Air Conditioning Pipe Fittings — Corroded

The air conditioning pipe fittings were corroded. Any work on the air conditioning system would need to account for this — corroded fittings increase the risk of damage during any future service or regas.

The Outcome

We prepared a full written report for the customer detailing every finding, its severity, and indicative costs to rectify. The report painted a clear picture: this car required significant investment beyond the purchase price. Armed with that information, the customer was able to make a fully informed decision — and avoid what could have been a very costly mistake.

This is exactly what a pre-purchase inspection is for. Not to put you off buying, but to make sure you know exactly what you're getting into before the money changes hands.

The Takeaway

Prestige cars can be genuinely rewarding to own — but they demand respect and proper due diligence. A pre-purchase inspection is one of the most valuable investments you can make before committing to any vehicle, and especially so on complex, high-value machinery like the Continental GTC. We'll give you a straight, detailed assessment — not a cursory walk-around. You deserve to know what you're buying.
